How basketball betting differs from football
Basketball produces a lot of points, rarely ends level and is played in short, timed periods. That shapes the markets. There is no common draw result as in football, so most bets are two-way; scoring is high, so totals and handicaps use lines like 221.5 points or 5.5 points rather than goals; and the game splits into quarters and halves, each of which can be bet on separately. NBA games last 48 minutes, in four 12-minute quarters, with 5-minute overtime periods if the score is level. FIBA competitions and most European leagues play 40 minutes in four 10-minute quarters. A total that suits an NBA game would be far too high for a 40-minute game, so always check which competition a line belongs to.
Ways to bet on basketball: the main markets
Every example below uses decimal odds, where the return includes your stake.
Moneyline (match winner)
The moneyline, also called the two-way or match winner market, asks only who wins. At most bookmakers it includes overtime, which is why there are two outcomes.
Worked example
₦5,000 on the home team at 1.65 shows how it settles. If they win, including in overtime, the return is ₦5,000 × 1.65 = ₦8,250, a profit of ₦3,250.
Some bookmakers also offer a three-way market (home, draw, away) settled on regulation time only. There, a game level after four quarters settles as a draw, and both team bets lose even though the game goes on to overtime. Read the market name carefully before you pick.
Point spread (handicap)
The point spread gives the favourite a points deficit and the underdog a head start. A favourite at -5.5 must win by 6 or more; the underdog at +5.5 wins the bet if it wins the game or loses by 5 or fewer.
Worked example
Say you stake ₦4,000 on the favourite at -5.5 with odds of 1.90. It wins by 8, so the bet wins: ₦4,000 × 1.90 = ₦7,600 back, ₦3,600 profit. Had it won by 5, the bet would lose.
Whole-number lines can push. At -6, a win by exactly 6 points returns the ₦4,000 stake, with no profit and no loss.
Totals (over/under points)
Worked example
A total asks whether both teams together score more or fewer points than the line. Take ₦3,000 on over 221.5 points at 1.87, a potential return of ₦3,000 × 1.87 = ₦5,610. Regulation ends 105–105, a total of 210, and the final after overtime is 116–113, a total of 229. If the bookmaker counts overtime for this market, as most do for full-game totals, your bet wins. If it settles on regulation only, the bet loses.
Quarter and half markets
Most full-game markets have quarter and half versions: first-half winner, first-quarter total, second-half spread and so on. Quarter and first-half markets are usually settled on that period alone. Second-half and fourth-quarter markets are where rules split, because some bookmakers add overtime to them and others do not.
How overtime affects settlement
Overtime rules are not universal. They are written by each bookmaker in its betting rules, and they can differ by market:
- Moneyline and full-game spreads and totals usually include overtime.
- Three-way and “regulation time” markets exclude it.
- Second-half and fourth-quarter markets vary.
- Player points markets usually count overtime points, but not everywhere.
Before you place a bet, open the market rules or the bookmaker’s house rules for basketball and look for the words “including overtime” or “regulation time”. If you cannot find them, ask support before staking.
An NBA betting guide for Nigerian bettors
The NBA usually gets the widest market choice, including player points, rebounds and assists. Most games are played in the North American evening, which is late night or early morning in Nigeria (WAT). That matters for live betting and for bets placed hours before tip-off, when team news can still change.

NBA odds react strongly to player availability. Teams rest stars on the second night of back-to-back games, and injury reports are often confirmed close to tip-off. A spread can move several points when a leading player is ruled out. If you bet hours in advance, you accept that risk; if you wait, the price may already reflect the news.

What actually improves your basketball bets
No market makes winning certain. What you can control is the price you accept. At odds of 1.90 you need to win 1 ÷ 1.90 = 52.6% of such bets just to break even, so a bettor who wins half their spread bets at 1.90 still loses money over time. Comparing prices, keeping stakes level and skipping games you know little about matter more than any system.
